Itinerary

DAY 1

After arrival, take a tour of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city.  With so many splendid attractions such as Jerónimos Monastery and Torre de Belem, which are both classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, you will never get bored in this city!  Overnight Lisbon, Portugal.

DAY 2

Just a short trip away from Lisbon are the beautiful towns of Sintra and Cascais. Start your tour with the journey to Sintra. Follow your guide to the historical centre where you’ll have free time to explore the town and visit Sintra National Palace. Next, admire the landscapes of Sintra Natural Park, passing Quinta da Regaleira. Enjoy a photo opportunity at the cliffs of  Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Afterwards wander around the centre of Cascais, a former fishing village and today a popular holiday spot.  Overnight Lisbon.

DAY 3

Start your journey eastwards, crossing the border into Andalucia, the southernmost province of Spain to arrive in the beautiful city of Seville for a guided city tour. The city has many impressive monuments dating back over the centuries. The Arabic Moors ruled Andalucia for many centuries and their legacy of marvellous architecture includes the stunning Alcazar. Equally impressive is the Gothic cathedral with its Giralda, a minaret transformed into a Christian bell tower. You will also see the Torre del Oro (Golden Tower) by the Guadalquivir River, and the majestic Plaza de España.  Overnight Seville, Spain.

DAY 4

Head into the picturesque coastal hills, passing through Ronda with its historic viaduct en route to Malaga.  Your sightseeing tour of this lovely city bordering the Mediterranean Sea takes in the Cathedral, the Alcazaba, and the exterior of the Picasso Museum, which houses more than 150 pieces donated by Picasso’s family. Later in the afternoon climb back away from the sea into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  Overnight Granada.

DAY 5

Today you will visit the Alhambra,  a UNESCO-listed palace complex and Granada’s most famous monument. Learn all the Alhambra’s intriguing history from your guide while exploring its delights, hearing tales of the Moorish Sultans who once called the palace their home. Visit Alcazaba Fortress and see Torre de la Vela, walk through the Alhambra’s most important halls and courtyards including the Nasrid Palaces, Patio de los Arrayanes, and the Salon de Embajadores. Afterwards, visit the Generalife Gardens and stroll through two of its beautiful courtyards. Enjoy some time at leisure during the afternoon – and maybe do a spot of shopping! Overnight Granada.

DAY 6

This morning admire the superb mountain scenery before descending through the olive groves to Cordoba. Walk across the Roman Bridge to reach the historic city centre and visit the Mezquita of Cordoba, a truly remarkable complex merging Arabic and Christian architecture regarded by many as one of  the finest religious buildings in Europe. Walk around the town with its cobblestone streets and pass by the Jewish District before heading to the railway station where you will take the AVE high speed train to Madrid.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 7

Travel a short distance south from Madrid this morning for a walking tour of the  UNESCO World Heritage city of Toledo. A highlight of your visit will be the sight of The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, the famous painting by 16th-century master El Greco, located in the Church of St Tome. See the exterior of the 13th-century Cathedral of Toledo, the medieval castle, Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue, San Juan of the Kings Monastery and the Victorio Macho Museum.
