Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival in Budapest, “Pearl of the Danube“,  meet your guide and transfer to your hotel for check in and a welcome drink.  Choose from a wide selection of different cuisines in this city with its many culinary influences at the crossroads of Central Europe .  Overnight Budapest.

DAY 2

Today join your expert local guide for a comprehensive sightseeing tour to discover the sights and learn about the complex history  of Budapest, the glorious capital of Hungary.  This is in fact a tale of two cities, Buda on its hill towering above its partner Pest on the flat plain below and only becoming one united city in 1873.  Highlights include a visit to the wonderful Central Market with its huge hall, and a drive around Budapest’s elegant boulevards to Heroes’ Square and then across the mighty Danube and up to Gellert Hill with views over this famous river which divides Buda from Pest – the two sides linked by the iconic  Chain and Elizabeth Bridges.  The medieval cobblestone streets of the Castle District are a joy to wander and your tour also takes you to witness the spectacular panorama from the Fisherman’s Bastion over the splendid Parliament building, one of the largest in Europe. Finish at the popular pedestrian shopping street of Váci Utca within easy reach of the city’s fine museums and monuments, churches and synagogues, historic squares and buildings.  Freshen up at your hotel before enjoying an evening of traditional Hungarian culture including dinner and a folklore show.  Overnight Budapest.

DAY 3

Choose from a wide range of excursions, visits and activities tailored perfectly to your requirements – here are just a few ideas for your 3rd day in Budapest:

Gala Concert  – Less well known than its illustrious Viennese neighbour, Budapest hosts equally outstanding musical recitals – so why not enjoy a visit to the Hungarian State Opera for a recital or a concert ?

The Thermal Baths – Budapest is on a geothermal “hot spot” in the earth’s crust where piping hot mineral waters emerge direct from the ground so thermal baths are a historic institution with the locals and you can enjoy the genuine Hungarian Thermal Bath experience here in the city today. You will feel like a new person after your spa treatment!

Cook like a Local – Join your chefs for a guided tour of the famous Great Market Hall in Budapest. Enjoy an unforgettable shopping experience, learning how to select the finest local ingredients for the day’s recipes from hundreds of vendors, many of whom have been there for generations,  before returning to the professionally equipped kitchens to get down to the exciting business of creating your dishes. You will learn the techniques that have been passed down through the generations here in the heart of Hungary and prepare a wonderful meal then it’s time to sit down with a glass of wine local Hungarian wine such as Bulls Blood or Tokai and enjoy the “fruits of your labours”

If not cooking your own dinner like a local enjoy dinner in another of Budapest’s excellent restaurants this evening.  Overnight Budapest.

DAY 4

Here are just a few more of the many programmes you can choose from as you enjoy another exciting day in the Hungarian capital.

Hammer & Sickle Experience – get a sense of what life was like during 50 years of communism. Learn how it all began and how big brother told Hungarians what to do and what not to do, what daily life was like behind the “iron curtain”, how children were brought up, how families lived, how and where we could travel, how long it took to get a passport and many other interesting experiences from black markets to banana lines.

Private cruise on the River Danube – Take a relaxing boat cruise along Budapest’s legendary waterfront with optional lunch, craft beer theme, wine theme etc.

Bon-Bon Making Workshop – Learn how to make traditional Hungarian sweets at Szamos Gourmet Palace, a charming cafe & chocolate manufacturing shop in the heart of Vörösmarthy Square.

Shopping!  – prices here are generally lower than Western Europe’s capital cities but the range of shopping is equally fine. Vaci Ut is a delightful traditional shopping street right in the centre and Budapest is also home to West End City Center, one of the very largest shopping Malls in Europe.

End your stay in Budapest in real style and select from our range of Gala Dinner options this evening – the following are just a few of the many on offer:
– Queen Elizabeth Ballroom at Gundel
– Historic Boat Restaurant on the Danube
– The Knights’ Room at Alabardos in Budapest Castle

This morning its time to head for the airport. Depending on your flight time we may be able to organise an excursion to the delightful historic town of Szentendre a short distance along the Danube from Budapest.
