HIGHLIGHTS OF EUROPE
This tour is a superb introduction to some of the very best that Europe has to offer. As a "highlights" tour we have included sightseeing tours where possible to ensure that you get the most out of your limited time here. If you have longer to spend exploring this fascinating and varied continent let us know and Go West can build in additional tour days to suit your timescale and budget discovering even more of Europe's gems.
From your UK arrival airport transfer to a hotel in the London area for some time to relax and refresh after the outward flight.
Transfer to St Pancras station in London, a superbly renovated Victorian masterpiece where you may wish to sample Europe's longest champagne bar before joining the efficient Eurostar high speed train which will whisk you at 300kmh through the "Garden of England" and the tunnel beneath the English Channel to emerge in France. It seems like no time at all before you are sweeping into the Gare du Nord station in the heart of Paris, where you will transfer to your hotel. This evening join your fellow travellers for a welcome drink in the bar before sampling your first taste of the legendary French cuisine for which this city and the whole of France is so famous.
This morning's sightseeing tour will show you the very best of the wonderful city of Paris. From the hill of Montmartre enjoy a majestic view across the city and take in the nearby church of Sacré Coeur with its great domes and the street cafes and artists that typify this quarter before descending to head along the wide and tree lined boulevards to the Trocadero for an unrivalled view of the Eiffel Tower. Enjoy the majesty of the Champs Elysées, perhaps Europe's most famous avenue, leading from the Arc de Triomphe arch to the enormous Place de la Concorde, en route to the world famous Louvre gallery with its well known pyramid. Following the banks of the winding Seine river brings you to the towering gothic spires of Notre Dame cathedral to name but a few of the sights you'll encounter. This evening why not take an evening dinner cruise on the tranquil River Seine to enjoy good food and wine and the wonderful view of the "City of Light" in all its glory tonight.
Join the famous TGV train - holder of the world speed record for rail transport. The peaceful French countryside simply whizzes by and in a flash you're in the heart of Europe and the beautiful country of Switzerland where there's a short sightseing tour of the cosmopolitan international city of Geneva, famous for its old town and cathedral , its banks and international organisations - the European HQ of the United Nations is here - and the enormous Jet d'Eau fountain soaring up from the waters of Lake Geneva, all set against the magnificent mountain backdrop of the Alps. Continue to your hotel in central Switzerland this evening.
Today is spent enjoying the dramatic mountain scenery of this most beautiful of countries as we head to the stunning lakeside city of Lucerne, surrounded by soaring alpine peaks and famed for its delightful wooden bridge and "chocolate box" scenes. Take a trip on a serene and historic lake steamer for more superb views and a ride up one of the amazing mountain railways that rise steeply up from the lakeside to reach the very top of the peaks themselves for views that are unequalled in Europe. The Swiss are renowned for their attention to detail, quality and service, and you're sure to enjoy your second night of outstanding Swiss hospitality in your hotel this evening.
Leave Switzerland today and head north into Germany for a journey through the remarkable Rhine Gorge. Here one of Europe's great rivers cuts through steep sided rocky outcrops winding its way north form the Alps to the sea. A major trade route since earliest times, the castles that controlled this gorge are the source of mystery and legend surrounding sailors lured to their death on treacherous rocks such as the Lorelei - many retold in the classical music of great German composers such as Liszt. We'll join a modern boat for a cruise along this busy waterway, the rocky hillsides eventually giving way to incredibly steep vineyards as we smoothly navigate the waters en route to the delightful medieval towns of Boppard and Koblenz and an overnight stay.
Koln (Cologne), in keeping with many of Germany's great cities, has emerged from the ravages of war to become a thriving modern venue for the arts, culture and business. Sitting astride the mighty River Rhine, with its teeming barge traffic, it still retains its ancient medieval centre and you'll have time to wander the pretty streets this morning after a guided visit to Koln's finest building, the soaring Gothic cathedral begun in 1248 that dominates the riverside skyline, with the largest facade and second tallest spires of any church in the world. Continuing north, the land flattens now, displaying it's own bucolic beauty as we cross into the Netherlands, witnessing a maze of canals and waterways, windmills and delightful gabled houses en-route to the exciting Dutch city of Amsterdam. Although not the capital, this is Holland's premier city and a wonderful place to explore on foot or by boat. A sightseeing tour to get your bearings is followed by the chance to visit the museums dedicated to great Dutch masters like Van Gogh and Rembrandt, the fascinating diamond trading houses or perhaps the Heineken brewery. This evening enjoy a dinner cruise on the canals or perhaps explore some of Amsterdam's famous nightspots before retiring to your hotel.
This morning we head south across the Dutch polders, low lying land remorselessly claimed back from the sea by the hardy peoples of these parts and into Belgium to visit the wonderful medieval town of Bruges. Enjoy lunch here and perhaps a ride by horse drawn carriage around the timeless narrow lanes or climb the winding stairs to the top of the Flemish belfry for amazing views across the higgledy piggledy rooftops. This afternoon return across the English Channel to your hotel in the London area overnight.
A guided city sightseeing tour will introduce you to the most famous of London's landmarks this morning including St Paul's Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. After lunch in a traditional English pub, this afternoon why not take a ride on the soaring London Eye for stunning views of the city skyline before taking in a show in one of the famous West End theatres this evening.
Transfer to the airport for your onward journey or join up with one of our superb tours taking in all the highlights of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
